  1. A volcano is a crack in the Earth's crust 
  2. through which hot magma (molten rock) and 
  3. gases well up. The magma becomes known as 
  4. lava when it reaches the surface. A volcanic 
  5. mountain, usually cone shaped with a crater 
  6. on top, is formed around the opening, or 
  7. vent, by the build-up of solidified lava and 
  8. ashes (rock fragments). Most volcanoes arise 
  9. on plate margins.
